A: Introduction to Figure Drawing - Alex Powers

Alex Powers

Alex Powers
lives in Myrtle Beach, SC, and this is his fifty-second time as an instructor at Springmaid Beach. He exhibits in five galleries and among his many national juried exhibition awards is the Gold Medal in the 1997 American Watercolor Society Exhibition. His book, Painting People in Watercolor – A Design Approach, is out of print.

The first session, Introduction to Figure Drawing, is a basic drawing class for beginners and for artists who paint other subject matter but who also have an interest in drawing or painting the figure from a model.

The second session, Design and Personal Style with Limited Models, will be based on 8 slides, originals, computer images or color photos of work that you bring from home. At your individual consultation, Alex will discuss your content (expression) and direction, and work towards achieving that goal. Also, included will be three slide programs, a demonstration, group critiques of class work and individual help. Models available 2 full days only. All media (except oils)

B: Color Emphasis/Acrylic/Collage - Carrie Burns Brown

Carrie Burns Brown

Carrie Burns Brown
, N.W.S., has studied art extensively and has painted, exhibited and conducted classes for forty years. She has taught at Springmaid Beach since 1985. Carrie’s innovative ways have prompted inclusion of her work in publications; and she presently has a DVD, Watermedia Collage.

The first two days of the workshop will focus on color and design using fluid acrylic paint as a multi-layered, transparent opaque water medium which can be applied to canvas or paper. Emphasis will shift to collage and the interaction of collage with acrylic paint. There will be an introduction to collage transfers and collage techniques tailored to the development of the students.

C: Watercolor Free and Easy - Eric Wiegardt

Eric Wiegardt

Eric Wiegardt, A.W.S., N.W.S., is a nationally recognized judge, juror, and award winner who has left an indelible mark on the American art scene with more than 20 years of professional painting and teaching experience. He is the author of Watercolor Free & Easy and is featured in many books along with magazine articles in Watercolor Magazine, International Artist, Watercolor Magic, and cover artist for The Artist’s Magazine. Eric is a graduate of the American Academy of Art in Chicago.

This is a workshop for those who wish to loosen up in watercolor and/or acrylic. Painting techniques and philosophy of design will be applicable in both mediums to encourage bold, loose paintings. Eric believes most painting problems are the violation of an elementary painting principle. Lectures will be easily understood and helpful to all levels of expertise. There will be ample time for students to try the concepts presented. The instructor will do a completed painting demonstration daily. Subject matter may include landscapes, marinescapes, florals, streetscapes, interiors, and still life. Weather permitting; some plein-air painting may be incorporated.

D: Master Class - Harold Gregor

Harold Gregor

Harold Gregor,
Professor Emeritus of Art at Illinois State University, taught painting, color theory and art history for 25 years, receiving the Burlington – Northern Award for Excellence in Teaching. He is the recipient of a 1993-94 National Endowment for the Arts grant, the 1993 Illinois Academy of Fine Arts Lifetime Achievement Award, and the 2006 National Watercolor Honor Society (WHS) Lifetime Achievement Award. His work is found in major public and private collections throughout the United States and Europe. The Artist Magazine featured him in October 2006.

The Master Class is intended for accomplished, self-motivating artists who are interested in expanding their thinking about watercolor as an aesthetic enterprise. Each participant will work in any manner desired. The group will meet for an hour each morning to discuss watercolor concepts and issues, particularly artistic assessment, analysis and traditions. The session will try to encourage an interchange between participants so that their collective understandings can be shared, questioned and discussed. Topics may include, “Color-formed space," “The limits of watercolor," “The technical display," “So what’s new?," and “Who is my audience?” Discussion will be accompanied with handouts. Since it is assumed that each participant already will have achieved an artistic individuality, individual scheduled critiques will involve artist options and personal goals, concerns, and thinking. No oils please.

This is an original, bold and entertaining workshop designed to teach you how to make better paintings by mastering collage techniques emphasizing texture, responding to surface developments and rescuing unsuccessful paintings. The overriding goal is to help you achieve new freedom of expression, learn to respond to surfaces and develop an alternative method of working with watercolor.

In Studio Landscape Painting, his workshop emphasizes content: how to put meaning into your paintings and express yourself in your work. The goal of this workshop is to help you achieve a depth of personal expression in your paintings. Design will be treated as a component of content, but the core of the workshop will involve color, mood, placement of subjects, personal expression and how to inject your feelings about the subject into your work.

I: Finding Your Voice in Paint - Skip Lawrence

Skip Lawrence

William B. (Skip) Lawrence
, received a B.F.A. degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art and M.A. degree from Towson University. His book, Painting Light and Shadow in Watercolor, was published in 1994. Skip is editor-and-chief of The Palette Magazine.

After you have explored all the “how too’s” of painting, you are still stuck with the “why”? Without a clear declaration of what one wants to say in one’s painting, it can become just an imitation of someone else’s work. Skip challenges painters to rewrite the rules their way, to consider their choices and shake up their status quo. Through lecture, demonstration and critique, Skip guides each painter to refine their intention and express it in new and honest ways. No one else but you can say what you want to say in paint—why settle for less? With insight, warmth and humor, Skip brings out the best in each painter.

The participant provides no more than 12 slides or actual paintings of recent work for an in-depth private discussion of his or her strengths and individuality. A second private critique, derived from work done in class, will suggest adjustments, if any, to the artists’ visual language. The week will end with group critique.

Note: Due to the allergic reactions of some artists, no oils, please.
