A: Authentic Painting Fran Larsen

Fran Larsen

Fran Larsen, N.W.S., lives and paints in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She has won numerous awards, and her work has been published in many prominent publications, including the cover of Taos Magazine.

This workshop will ask you to question knee-jerk reactions to the art making process, examining what emotional content you want your paintings to carry, who is the authentic "you", and what do you think and feel? Students will work independently with private conferences based on 5 paintings (slides or photos acceptable) done in the past year. Class will include slides, lectures and videos. Due to the allergic reactions of some artists, no oils, please.

B: Finding Your Voice in Paint - William B. (Skip) Lawrence

William B. (Skip) Lawrence

William B. (Skip) Lawrence, received a B.F.A. degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art and M.A. degree from Towson University. His book, Painting Light and Shadow in Watercolor, was published in 1994. Skip is editor-in-chief of The Palette Magazine. After you have explored all the "how to’s" of painting, you are still stuck with the "why?" Without a clear declaration of what one wants to say in one’s painting, it can become just an imitation of someone else’s work.

Skip challenges painters to rewrite the rules their way, to consider their choices and shake up their status quo. Through lecture, demonstration and critique, Skip guides each painter to refine their intention and express it in new and honest ways. No one else but you can say what you want to say in paint – why settle for less? With insight, warmth and humor, Skip brings out the best in each painter.

C: Open Painting / Critique Studio - Katherine Chang Liu

Katherine Chang Liu

Katherine Chang Liu, N.W.S., is a full- time exhibiting artist whose recent shows are in the US and Europe. Aside from teaching and serving as juror for competitive shows, Katherine has been working as an invited curator for galleries in Santa Fe, San Francisco and Santa Monica. She has been teaching at Springmaid since 1987. This session is for artists who need a thorough evaluation of his/her body of work to date.

The workshop is set up like a working studio; artists work independently in their own approaches in any watermedia.

The participant provides no more than 12 slides or actual paintings of recent work for an in-depth private discussion of his or her strengths and individuality. A second private critique, derived from work done in class, will suggest adjustments, if any, to the artists’ visual language. The week will end with group critique. Note: Due to the allergic reactions of some artists, no oils, please.

D: Design and Personal Style with 2 Days of Models - Alex Powers

Alex Powers

Alex Powers, lives in Myrtle Beach, SC, and this is his fiftysixth time as an instructor at Springmaid Beach. His book, Painting People in Watercolor – A Design Approach, was published in 1989 and is out of print.

This workshop will be based on 8 slides, originals, computer images or color photos of work that you bring from home. At your individual consultation, Alex will discuss your content (expression) and direction, and work towards achieving that goal.

Also, included will be three slide programs, a demonstration, group critiques of class work and individual help. Models available 2 full days only. All media (except oils).

F: Studio Landscape Painting: Design and Content - Gerald F. Brommer

Jerry has twelve instructional video tapes, including “Watercolor in Action-Responding to Nature” and “Exploring Watercolor from Location to Studio”.

This innovative workshop emphasizes content, or how to put meaning into your paintings and express yourself in your work. Design will be dealt with as a component of content, but the core of the workshop will be in dealing with color, mood, placement of subjects, personal expression, and how to inject your personal feelings about the subject into your work. What do you want to share with viewers when they look at your work? How does the subject make you feel? Why are you painting it in the first place? What do you want to say in your paintings? These and other questions will form the basis for the workshop in both discussions and in the work that will be done.

The overriding goal is to help you achieve freedom of expression, and to edit resource materials to help you say what yo wish to say in your paintings
